Starting off the year right with a private dinner at STK Atlanta for NBC’s This Is Us as it returns to the network. One of the breakthrough and most buzzed about new shows on television, This Is Us is a fan favorite and I was invited to an intimate press event to speak with one of the cast members, Susan Kelechi Watson. If you are not familiar with the show yet, please read the synopsis below.

Synopsis: Sometimes life will surprise you. Starring Mandy Moore (“A Walk to Remember”), Milo Ventimiglia (“Heroes,” “Gilmore Girls”) and Sterling K. Brown (“The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”), this refreshingly honest and provocative series follows a unique ensemble. As their paths cross and their life stories intertwine in curious ways, we find that several of them share the same birthday and so much more than anyone would expect. From the writer and directors of “Crazy, Stupid, Love” comes a smart, modern dramedy that will challenge your everyday presumptions about the people you think you know.

I love when there are media events where its intimate and personal and I thank NBC for setting up the mood and relaxed environment to speak with Susan Kelechi Watson. Susan plays “Beth” on This Is Us and we couldn’t wait to speak with her. Susan was so sweet, it was a small room of Atlanta top media outlets and she got a chance to speak to all of us in intervals during a close-round table discussion. She took the time to answer ever question she could, laughed with us and chatted over dinner about her character and what to anticipate as the show returns.

Susan’s character Beth is so refreshing to see on television. They are the African American family which consist of Randall and Beth who really showcase a realistic suburban black upper-middle class family. She is a great depiction of a true African American woman in America as she is gentle but still knows how to balance motherhood and being a wife without it weaken her character. She is actually the strength to her husband Randall, who has have several vulnerable moments (which is very rare to see a black man show these type of emotions on televisions) which shows how strong their bond is. This is the true emulation of black love and This is Us does a great job showing off this couple in a way I think many havent seen in a long time on tv.

Susan’s character Beth is also a black woman who rocks her hair in protective styles, braids, head scarfs to give even more black girl realistic magic just with her style alone. Beth showcases a form of a strong black woman that doesn’t have to come off as aggressive or angry. Due to the nature of the show very emotional topics of life and death, she is one of the stronger cast members of this show in a dynamic way. You just have to watch and see for yourself, but Susan great job for bringing a character to life and show a woman of color in a more authentic light.
