[NBC TAKEN] GAIUS CHARLES WEEKLY CHAT | Hail Mary Wednesday 05 April, 2017

I am back with another mini recap of NBC’s Taken with the weekly chat with Gaius Charles. Its so great to be apart of these intimate weekly phone convos with him and other journalist that we get a in-depth look of the episodes, his character each week and his thoughts! This week was really excited for Gauis Charles’s character John, as we get to see him go back to his hometown and see a little more of a backstory on him too.

Taken - Season 1 Taken - Season 1 Taken - Season 1

John is such a hardbody throughout this series so far. He is stone cold,  stoic and very serious. He is a Black Ops agent, so of course that automatically comes with the territory, but behind the “steel” we get a little more of the real. Many times we see actions shows or movies and these agents have no depth. Just hardcore missions and overcome danger and fatal situation, it can be a job that makes a person expressionless. We see in Hail Mary he shows a little more vulernability from what happened in Ep.5 (have to see that episode to understand) and a mixture of his past that shows us why he is the machine he is today!

Gauis Charles was so excited to share with us about this episode.  It gave his character John a human element versus this big tough man of steel. It showcases him dealing with stress and real issues, such as PTSD, which could be a common disorder for actual members of a Black Ops team. He explains this episode was a “story of redemption” as it spoke to the heart and for the greater good.

To sum of the “Hail Mary” episode there is a powerful quote that was inserted in the show by writer/showrunner Alex Cary: “Instead of praying for a solution, BE the solution.” This quote was a spin-off on Ghandi’s famous line, “Be the change you wish to see in the world” and ultimately this is what John career is motivating him to do.

It was awesome to see the layers of John’s character become personified into a real life human with some vulnerabilities exposed. Sometimes in action genres they do not like to expose that in fear it will weaken a male character, but to me it adds to their strength. I love how this series has taken TAKEN (double pun) characters and not just focused on the Bryan Mills character but the people around him and his team.

If you are a fan of the movie, you will understand the Bryan Mills character more but definitely will see the people around him have a backstory as well and get more than just a typical “action” show. Speaking of Bryan Mills, according to Gaius Charles, we were given a sneak synopsis of the next episode that Bryan will literally get TAKEN and learn how to survive being tortured and captured!

That should be interesting. I hope you are caught up, if not go watch and follow up with the Weekly Chats with Gauis Charles. Have any questions for the show leave them in the comments below!

Watch TAKEN every Monday night at 10:00pm/9c on NBC
