THINGS TO DO IN UPTOWN COLUMBUS,GA Monday 23 October, 2017

Have you ever done a statecation? Have you ever heard of the term statecation? A statecation is bascially a vacation within your own state. Well I have done a few and currently visited Uptown Columbus,GA for a statecation weekend trip with a friend. I never been to Columbus,GA and I was surprised to find a lot of fun activities and things to do in this emerging town. Check out below some of the amazing things I did in the Uptown Columbus area.

MUSEUMS

Ma Rainey House and Blues Museum

Ma Rainey’s actual house. Considered to be the true mother of Soul

After years of neglect, and after decades of being in a state of unrestored limbo, the Gertrude “Ma” Rainey House in Columbus is all dressed up and ready to rock. Exhibits in the Rainey Museum interpret the life and career of Ma Rainey, and trace the history and influences of the blues tradition of the lower Chattahoochee River Valley, a region for which Columbus is the population and cultural center.

When Gertrude “Ma” Rainey ended her show business career in 1935 after a lifetime of performing on the road, she moved back to her hometown of Columbus and settled into a a two-story “shotgun” house on Fifth Avenue. Rainey lived in the house for less than five years before she died of heart failure Dec. 22, 1939, at just 53 years old. Ma Rainey left behind a legacy as the “Mother of the Blues.”

The Columbus Museum

The Columbus Museum has a special collection featured now called the AND WE STILL RISE exhibit. It was created by artist of Women of Color Quilters Network. What makes this unique is the array of quilts like you’ve never seen before to learn about African American history personalities stitch by stitch in amazing quiltwork designing.

ENTERTAINMENT

Market Saturdays

Uptown Fall Friday Night series

Every Friday the town gets a free concert! The entire Broadway strip is full of people in chairs or standing to enjoy the concert. This night was featured by the R&B band DSOS.

I ziplined from Georgia to Alabama!

One of the newest features of Uptown Columbus,GA is the outdoor adventures you can have. I had to do the ziplining once I heard you can zip from state to state. Thats right, Columbus,Ga is the only place in the world where you can zip from state to state! From Georgia to Alabama! I couldn’t get my friend to go, so I had to brave it by myself. Of course I was nervous, but I ziplined last year so I knew what to expect. When I actually crossed over, I was really in Alabama! It was amazing. During the month of October (which is when I went) it is Zombie Zip. Basically, you will get a few surprises on you way to zipping back to Georgia!

Enjoying the patio seating at 11th and Bay

Columbus was a lot of fun. It’s only 1 1/2 hours away from the city of Atlanta. I would definitely return again for more entertainment and just a getaway from my area. Sometimes it’s fun to have a statecation and explore what another town has to offer. Columbus is growing, evolving and modernizing to be a city with plenty to do, relax and have family time. I will definitely be back to return as it’s still growing with other amenities and activities to explore.

I’d like to thank Visit Columbus GA  for my travel accommodation. I was apart of an organized press trip on the behalf of the Visit Columbus GA Tourism Board. As always, all opinions are my own.

What do you think of Uptown Columbus,GA?
