Visiting the Tubman Museum in Macon, Georgia Wednesday 14 June, 2017

So as you seen in my previous post I visited Macon,Georgia for a full day and it was a place full of soul and history. Speaking of soul and history, they have a very famous museum called Tubman Museum – Museum of African American Art, History, and Culture.  This was one of the first things I did when I got to Macon and it was definitely an experience.

Now as with most museums, you aren’t allowed to do a lot of flash photography or video but trust me this place was great to get a glimpse of some great history of African American culture. Its sad that some of African American history even in this modern age is still reduced to only learning about slavery or only focusing on the works of Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks just Harriet Tubman. Although this Tubman Museum was made in honor of the iconic Harriet Tubman, this is not a museum only highlighting her works. But the cool thing you are allowed to take pictures near here tribute statue so below check out the photos I took of it.

Yes you can take a picture with the huge Harriet Tubman statute. I felt like I was really taking a picture of an icon! I wish, but going through her tribute area here are some fun facts I learned:

Did You Know Harriet Tubman’s Real Name is Araminta Ross.

Her nickname was Minty.

In 1896 she purchased 25 acres of land.

She passed with having 7 acres of land, a brick house and a barn.

In 1844, she married John Tubman, a free African American.

She was married twice, but to her second husband she kept her Tubman last name.

She was the first woman to lead an armed expedition in the war. She guided the Combahee River Raid, consisting of 300 free African soldiers on 3 gun boats to liberate more than 700 enslaved Africans in South Carolina.

Harriet Tubman was a disabled person. She had Narcolepsy or sleeping spells. She could fall asleep any time and any place. This was caused by a severe blow to the head by a 2-pound iron weight thrown at another enslaved African, but it hit Harriet in the head when she was about 12 years old.

I honestly did not know many of this information on her prior to my arrival at this Museum. So much history, art and documents to preserve her legacy beyond the common things we learned of her.

Outside of her tribute there are so much more art, history and culture here to explore. I would highly recommend anyone who appreciates history, storytelling and definitely art of any kind to take a trip to the Tubman Museum.
