From Boomers to Zoomers: Lindsay Lohan & Jamie Lee Curtis Bridge the Gap in Freakier Friday Wednesday 06 August, 2025

Walking into the theater for Freakier Friday felt like a full-circle moment. Twenty years ago, I was the teenager rocking out to Pink Slip and feeling seen by Anna Coleman’s rebellious spirit. This time, I was taking my own teen cousin, bridging a generational gap with a story I never thought we’d see continue. I went in with cautious optimism, and I came out completely blown away. Let me be clear: Freakier Friday is a masterclass on how to do a legacy sequel right.

First and foremost, Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis are not just here for a paycheck. Their chemistry is as electric and effortless as it was in 2003, and they slide back into their roles with a warmth that feels like coming home. And can we just take a moment to appreciate how absolutely incredible both women look? Lindsay Lohan is stunning at her respectful age of 39 and Jamie Lee Curtis at 66 continues to be a true icon, proving that powerhouse talent is timeless.

This also adds a fantastic new layer to the story. For me, the original film was the ultimate Millennial vs. Boomer trope; Lindsay Lohan is my peer, and Jamie Lee Curtis is my parents’ peer. Fast forward 22 years, and the sequel brilliantly evolves this into a full-blown Gen Alpha & Gen Z vs. the Millennials & Boomers showdown (you know, “the super old generation” according to TikTok). With this new dynamic set, they once again smash generational stereotypes, but this time they’re inviting Gen Z and Alpha to join the chaotic fun. What’s truly special is seeing how the original switch left a lasting impact. Anna has traded her righteous teen angst for gentle parenting techniques, while Tess—in a delightful twist of irony—has shed her “strict hammer” persona to become the cool, relatable grandma. It’s a beautiful, believable evolution for two of cinema’s most iconic mother-daughter duos. They not only broke the curse of the first switch, but they broke a generational curse within each other and are closer than ever.

But this isn’t just a simple nostalgia trip. The movie earns its “Freakier” title with a brilliant new twist and a bit of dejavu. Forget the straightforward mother-daughter swap. This time, the magic goes into overdrive, pulling in the next generation. Anna’s teen daughter, Harper (Julia Butters), and her soon-to-be stepdaughter, Lily (Sophia Hammons), also get caught in the cosmic crossfire, but not in the way you’d expect. This creates a hilarious dynamic of newbie switchers versus the original pros, offering a fresh conflict that feels both familiar and entirely new.

Disney sprinkled this movie with the perfect amount of nostalgic pixie dust without overdoing it. You’ll get callbacks to Britney’s “…Baby One More Time,” the return of beloved original characters, and yes, a mini Pink Slip reunion that will have every millennial’s heart soaring. The film cleverly updates the teen aspirations, swapping the 2000s garage band dream for today’s world of surfing and fashion design. Surprisingly, it also ditches the lazy “teens on their phones” trope, instead finding more meaningful ways to show how the generations clash and connect.

At its heart, though, the more things change, the more they stay the same. It’s still teens versus adults, a frantic race against time, and yes—another wedding hangs in the balance, threatening to go completely off the rails. The stakes are higher, the magic is messier, and the whole situation just got a lot more twisted.

It’s a chaotic, heartfelt, and hilarious new chapter that proves some stories are timeless. In the immortal words of Pink Slip:

“Round and round, here we go again
Same old start, same old end”
