The ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood Awards & Gala was presented by The Lincoln Motor Company showed out with one of the hottest event that preluded the Oscars. This event is highlighting black women in Hollywood in all of their glitz and glam, a special award ceremony that gives credit to the women who deserve it!
ESSENCE, the preeminent brand for African-American women, proudly honored remarkable moments and performers in film and television at yesterday’s 10th annual ESSENCE Black Women In Hollywood Awards & Gala. Honoring Hollywood’s “Next Generation” the 2017 ESSENCE Black Women In Hollywood awards were presented to Janelle Monáe, Issa Rae, Aja Naomi King and Yara Shahidi.
All hail Issa Rae. I love her so much. I am an original ABG (Awkward Black Girl) and she had a major breakout debut as a director/writer/actor of her own show Insecure. Uber proud and the epitome of Black Girl Magic. Issa Rae was presented the Vanguard Award by Debbie Allen.
Jurnee is my girl. She is my celeb doppelganger (everyone has told me my whole life I look like her). She is a new mom but looks radiant. Love you girl.
Lets all send Viola Davis some good Oscar winning energy for her nomination in Fences. We are rooting for you! Actress Aja Naomi King was presented the Lincoln Shining Star Award by Viola Davis.
We need to really give Janelle her props she has been working it! She is featured in not one, but TWO Oscar nominated movies. She is the co-stars of 2017 Academy Award nominated films Hidden Figures and Moonlight. She is so multi-talented its crazy. This is definitely her year already! Effortless with the fashion per usual. Janelle Monáe was presented the Breakthrough Award by Pharrell Williams.
Meagan can do no wrong to me. She is forever the effortless girl next door and the faux locs is definitely still an amazing look for her!
Many of the Orange is the New Black Cast were there. One of my favorite shows. They all clean-up nicely from prison jumpsuits to red carpet fab! I love them all!
Laverne Cox girl…how just how? She looks amazing like she has an amazing glam squad. You Glow Girl!
You know I love anything Tracee Ellis-Ross does. She is my mom in my head. Her hair, her style, her aura is always everything! Hi Mom!
Yara Shahidi was presented the Generation Next Award by Tracee Ellis Ross.
Hey girl where you been? She grew up, if you need a quick reminder Qwenzhane is still the youngest person to be nominate for an Academy Award in history. She was nominated for her role in Beast of the Southern Wild when she was only five then the film was produced, and nine when she was nominated.
Singer and Former Destiny’s Child member Letoya Luckett did not come to play. Definitely red carpet chic ready! Love the fit of this gown.
This is by far one of my favorite looks of the night! She is gave me Spring in Bloom Vibes.
MALE EYE CANDY
Doesnt everyone look ravishing! Man I wish I was there but I feel the excellence through the screen!
Known as one of Oscar week’s most exalted and star-studded events, the red carpet included celebrity appearances and guests such as Gabrielle Union, Shonda Rhimes, Viola Davis, Pharrell Williams, Common, Tracee Ellis Ross, Jurnee Smollet-Bell, Laverne Cox, Alfre Woodard, Holly Robinson Pete, Sherri Shepard, Tyrese Gibson, Alfred Enoch, Letoya Luckett, Quvenzhane Wallis, Debbie Allen, Tina Knowles-Lawson, Loni Love, Margaret Avery amongst others. Cynthia Erivo offered a heart-wrenching solo performance between honoree acceptances.
The ESSENCE Black Women In Hollywood Awards & Gala will be televised as an ESSENCE and OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network special, airing on Sunday, March 5 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on OWN.

It is fascinating to compare all the different styles and looks.
Looks like it was a fun event! All the beautiful people were there! You know Tracee Ellis Ross is such a wonderful person in person as well. I’ll never forget meeting her. She’s a true gem!

Janelle & Samira were my faves but I loved seeing them ALL!!
These men and women look fabulous. This is a very refreshing image to me.
This is one of the events I so want to attend in my lifetime. I need to be surrounded by this fabulousness. Alfre Woodard looks fabulous! I love Yara Shahidi’s dress!
I see a lot of my favorites, I will be tuned in and watching. I’ve already set the DVR. Quvenzhané, is all grown up now. Good for her.

Issa’s dress is beautiful. I love seeing the Orange is the New Black ladies. Great recap.
All the dresses, show me all the dresses! I love award season, seeing the stars looking fabulous and celebrating the amazing year.
Everyone looks so fab! Issa Rae stepped on out in that black dress, and was best dressed in my opinion!
If this isn’t Black Girl (& Guy) Magic, I don’t know what is. They all look beautiful. I can’t pick a favorite!
Awesome photos! I’m so excited for the live event this weekend!
SISTAS are looking fierce!! Thanks for pulling this all together. BLack Girls Rock!! I love it!!
Looks like it was a great event! I love that you highlighted such talented and beautiful entertainers.
All these beautiful blacks! We making history in this world
My favorite person on this list would have to be Viola Davis. Every time I watch her on screen I am completely captivated. & the pink dress on her is just gorgeous!
Omg they all look absolutely stunning! I love that pink dress Viola wore. Looks great with her skin tone!
We came and SHOWED OUT!!!! I think Issa Rae’s dress is my fave. My goodness… So beautiful!
i have no favourite ,they are beautiful and talented actors/actresses, all unique indivuduals ,standing (posing)tall and strong in their own skin.
So many fabulous looks. I love that most of their wore nude lipstick. Darker lipstick adds a beautiful pop of color but also tends to age women. The nude look brings a bit of freshness to their ensemble.
Everyone looks absolutely stunning but Issa Rae and Janelle Monae slayed!!! I love all the natural looking make up looks also. Black girl magic on full display!
Love this post! Everyone looked so stunning! Yes ISSA!!!
