Miss Jessies Book Creating a Successful Business from Scratch – NATURALLY + Book Tour Monday 06 April, 2015
As you all know I had a really great year with the Miss Jessie’s care brand last year. This brand if you don’t know took my lifeless hair and brought life into it when I found out about the Jelly Soft Curls. From there I couldn’t stop talking about it, and basically haven’t stop embracing my curls since then. Going forward, I was surprised with an opportunity in 2013 to be apart of their 2014 ad campaigns that allowed me to be featured in 7 national print magazines and even a few billboards across the nation! It was amazing and I was proud to be associated with the brand, but the brand is elevating. Miss Jessie’s is now bigger than a haircare line, it’s now developed into a book created by the CEO/Owner of the brand Miko Branch.
I love Miko Branch for the opportunities she presented to me. This brand has changed me in more ways than one ; see my features here read about them here and here…but I want to celebrate her. She isn’t just a brand innovator, she is now an author! Miko and her sister Titi Branch took an idea, that was inspired by their grandmother Miss Jessie’s (the company namesake) and built a pioneering product that was 100 geared towards making a haircare line to embrace one’s natural curls. Yes there are many products on the market but Miss Jessie’s was the 1st to create many hair products to have the best darn curls period since 2005!
The book Miss Jessie’s: Creating a Successful Business from Scratch – NATURALLY, is an autobiography as well as a self-help book into become an entrepreneur. A very motivating book to inspire many to start your own business and how to do it while sharing the backgrond and history of this profile and pioneering beauty brand.
I got my copy of the Miss Jessie’s book and I can honestly say I am in awe and inspired by the journey of this brand. It’s also sparked an ah-ha moment I would like to share with you all about my own brand developing journey.
Last year was an amazing year, but it sparked an ah-ha moment in me. Maybe I should continue this route. Building my brand and strengthening my writing and freelance skills. To take my public relations degree and use it on myself to help elevate my brand and even be my own client lol. My ah-ha moment opened my eyes that in the long scheme of things I needed to seek multiple streams of income and not limit myself to just an organization to work for. My ah-ha moment came from the fact that I have to foster my dreams and not only grow someone elses because you can only get so far with that. When you limit yourself to just a “job”, you take away your own dreams and potential to be great. I still don’t have all the answer, my ah-ha moment hasn’t made me a millionaire (yet) but my momentum to getting closer to my career goals is elevating.
This book is also a tribute piece dedicated to the late Titi Branch, who was the sister to Miko Branch and they created the Miss Jessie’s brand together. So although she passed late last year, her legacy with the brand and help with elevating the natural hair revolution with see today will live on. #SmileForTiti
The Miss Jessie’s book is available at amazon.com and Barnes & Noble. They also have a special promotion where you can receive a T-shirt when you pre-order the book through 12:00 am on April 13, 2015! #IamMissJessies #MissJessiesBook

This sounds like a great read for anyone looking to start a business. I love the giveaway, too. That’s a ton of great products.
I have a friend who would be very interested in this book. She is just planning on starting a tee shirt business.
Sounds like a fantastic read. I will check it out
It would be really cool to hear their perspectives on building a business. The products sound great too!
Sounds like a great business!
My a-ha career moment is when I realized that I could get out of the rat race and start working for myself. I’m glad I never looked back!
It sounds like a great book with valuable resources for those who want to start their own business. Great giveaway too!
Yes, they just stopped here in Chicago. So sad I missed it, I’m going to have to check the book ot.
They are absolutely gorgeous. I can’t wait to read this book.
What an amazing read this must be! Great giveaway too! Good luck to everyone entering!
I feel you. When I left the staffing side recruiting industry I started a Career Coaching Business, that has now morphed into Life Coaching, it’s so motivating to be an entrepreneur, if you are going to put the bulk of your waking hours and use your energy to fire up any project it should be your own!
Sorry to hear of Titi’s passing, I had no idea! 🙁
If I were going to be in Atlanta I would have been in there like swimwear for that event though!
Miss Jessie’s book sounds like the best way I know of to learn everything there is to know about starting and running a successful business. I wish I could be in Atlanta for the book tour, but alas, there is no way for me to make it.
You know, I didn’t always have curly hair, it seems the older I get the more my hair curls.
This sounds like a great book! I don’t think I have a career aha moment yet! I will have to think about it and see, but I’m sure there’s nothing yet!
I love seeing lady entrepreneur success stories. Sounds like an uplifting book. So inspiring for me too!
Congratulations on finding your passion! Nothing is more rewarding than loving what we do!
What an amazing opportunity for you to be featured on their marketing campaigns. You have great hair so I would want you on my marketing campaign as well.
Before moving to MI my mother and I had our own business in OK. I guess I come by the entrepreneurial spirit naturally as she was self-employed for many years. She was a real estate broker with her own business through my childhood and on to my teen years later trading home clients for retail clients. I guess you could say I have a few of my own businesses – writing, accounting, marketing. As I have been self employed off and on since the mid 90s and solely since 2008.
This sounds like an interesting book for me. I have been thinking about opening a small business for years now.
I absolutely love the personality you bring to this post! Even though I am not in the Atlanta area, I will definitely be looking more into Miss Jessie and all of the wonderful resources she offers! Thank you for sharing this with us!
I agree that their products are amazing! It has taught me to embrace my curls as well. My career “ah ha” moment would have to been when I was struggling to format my first Ebook. It literally took me the whole day…tears and frustration BUT when it was finally complete, that feeling of accomplishment was like no other. I knew then that there was nothing else I wanted to do.
Isn’t it so great when you find a company you can believe in? When they have a great method and product, it is wonderful how you can jump on board to share the success. Looking forward to learning more about your journey and accomplishments!
Ooooh! I will definitely be in the hizouse! Lol
I will be in attendance of Sunday and I am so excited. I already Pre ordered my book but I may buy another and gift it. I love to see strong women of color living their dreams and leading by example. Images like these are what drove me to become an entrepreneur. I learned early that the road to success is not always paved. However, I appreciate the travel and the growth along the way.
I have the weirdest hair. It’s kinda like in between a wave, a kink, a curl and straight. Some parts are stick straight, others are curly. So, I blow dry it and it seems to have a light wave that way.
My career aha moment was actually when I stopped working full time and became a stay at home mom. I now blog and do what I love!
I’d love to turn blogging into my main business, but I’m not at that point yet. This looks so empowering!
How wonderful to have goals propelling forward. Mine have been stagnant for 7 years. I’m overdue to move out of the muck and back onto an even road. 😉
I am inspired by people like Miss Jessie who bring new products that have never been out to the market before. It’s like being the lead in setting out a trend. Entrepreneurship is one thing that I have yet to try maybe next time when I have a brilliant idea to showcase to the world.
It is awesome that you are a part of that Blogger tour. It looks like a wonderful group of women. My career Aha moment is when I realized that the same hard work and dedication I was giving to another company that had no loyalty to me (laid me off at the first sign of danger), I could use it to start my own business. And here I am 8 years later
How amazing that Miss Jessie’s has grown as a brand so quickly. It’s amazing that you were featured in their adverts and billboards too – you go girl! I’d love to use their products on my sons curly hair, it’s so curly!
wow. i love this post. i am absolutly a lover of these beaitiful hairs. unfortunatlly i have got wavy hair 🙁 i would love to have hairs like this, these are so sexy in my opinion. thanx for the post
oooh great giveaway!
I have heard great things about Miss Jessie’s products. I have natural hair, but have never managed to use it. I think i will give the soft jelly curls a try and definitely try out the book on business. I am inspired to soar.
I really love books from real people. Must be an awesome one for you since you personally follow the people behind it. I want to have my own business and become independent or be the one to employ people — but for now, I am still in the wilderness. I hope you find true inspiration with this book. Thank for you sharing.
That is great you found something you have a passion for. What a great opportunity for you!
Congratulations!! I have actually started my own business, but goodness knows I could use some tips and guides to growing it!
Gorgeous, gorgeous curls and look! <3 It's amazing and inspirational of how many paths ambitious women have taken, to create their dream career. Miss Jessie definitely being one of them, and sharing the non-conventional path of developing yourself in multiple ways. Your PR and writing skills sound like a natural fit to build a compelling brand – best of luck! 🙂

Congrats to Miko on this book. I’m sure there will be lots of inspiration because she built such an aeee brand with her sister. I had my hair cut at their salon a few years back and it was awesome to meet TitI and her gorgeous curls. It’s sad to see titi photos. I’m sure you’ll be awesome on the panel you look great and I see a few of my other blogger boos. I may have to check it out in NYC.
love seeing successful women build businesses. Thanks for sharing this story
I will definitely be checking this Book out on Amazon. I like to learn about Businesses from scratch
I love it when I find a brand, company, or product that I really believe in. It makes a world of difference when I have that connect and it definitely does make an impact on me.
I will definitely check this book out. sounds amazing.
I am really into books on entrepreneurship this year. I plan to open my own small business accounting firm sometime in the future. I’m really exited to and this book to my reading list.
I just started my own blog about 6 weeks ago, so I am new to being a business owner. I am super excited and a little nervous!
I cannot wait to try these products. I love the story of how these gals took their Grandmothers idea and created a business out of it! So amazing!
This is a great post. I’ve been using Miss Jessie’s for a while now. My current favorite is the Pillow Soft Curls product. I love the way it makes my hair feel. Congratulations on being part of the campaigns. That is awesome!
Congrats on your success- the book looks awesome!!
I love seeing other women being successful in business for themselves! Great job!
Believing in myself is the biggest first step and I want my own biz, too. I am a dog lover and blogger.
Looks interesting – thanks for sharing
book looks interesting, I am working on expanding my business now!
LOVE!! Miss Jessie’s was the first natural product I ever purchased back in 2005 when I did my big chop. Back then you could only order online and they didn’t have nearly what they have now. I love how much they’ve grown. I pre-ordered my book almost two weeks ago. I can’t wait for it to arrive.
I’m still working on y ah-ha moment. I want to continue building and branding MimiCuteLips but I want to host events, become an ambassador for brands and interview folks.
Your hair is so fab! I am loving when companies do blog tours and special events. It makes it so much more exciting!
It is great to find ways to make it easier to enjoy one’s natural hair and feel beautiful.
Sounds like a must read for anyone interested in starting their own business. The launch event also sounds like a fun time, wishing we were closer and able to attend. Enjoy!
Wow! My ah-ha moment was when people started asking for my next blog post. I was like who me, you mean people are actually reading what I wrote. I can’t wait to read this book. Thanks for sharing!
Sounds like the book is a lovely tribute to what they built together!
My aha moment was when I realized that I am good and that I should own it. I always doubt myself because I don’t have my degree but degreed people seek ME out for help!
My aha moment was when someone referred to something that I had been doing moreso as a hobby versus building a brand, as being the go-to resource, in my market! That totally changed my drive to truly making an effort to build my brand and not just give away too much of what I’ve learned for free. It’s fine to offer a certain amount of advice, but you can’t constantly give away valuable lessons it’s taken you years to learn for free to help others build their dreams, while you’ve yet to build your own.
My a-ha moment was realizing I’m the one saying “no” and closing doors before they can open. I need to be more confident and stop fearing rejection.
