Synopsis: Kevin Hart and Ice Cube lead the lineup in RIDE ALONG, the next comedy from the director of Think Like a Man. When a tough undercover officer’s (Cube) future brother-in-law (Hart) joins him on an overnight shift, the wisecracking trainee gets accidentally embroiled in the seasoned cop’s latest case. Now, in order to prove that he is worthy of his future bride, he must survive the most insane night of his life. Joining Hart and Cube in the film from Tim Story are John Leguizamo, Tika Sumpter, Bryan Callen and Jay Pharoah. Ice Cube produces alongside Matt Alvarez (Barbershop), Will Packer (Think Like a Man) and Larry Brezner (Good Morning, Vietnam). –Ride Along (AMC)
My Opinion: Do you love a movie that has great promo? This is a comical cops and robbers type of story. Its mixed with a tad bit of love and a lot of comedic energy from everyone’s favorite comedian Kevin Hart. Ben (Kevin Hart) is in love with his girlfriend Angela (Tika Sumpter) and wants to marry her real soon. The main issue is that he doesn’t feel worthy enough to propose to Angela yet until he can impress her brother James (Ice Cube) with his blessings. James is a real cop and isn’t impressed with Ben who he views as a short Rent-A-Cob wannabe. James doesn’t think Ben is suitable to be with his sister, let alone marry her, but takes Ben on a Ride Along to possibly scare him into not wanting to join the Police Academy.
James purposely take Ben on different local missions in the Atlanta area which are annoying and over-the-top, in which Ben try to get himself involved poorly in each situation. Honestly Kevin Hart’s character does a good job playing – well Kevin Hart. Although his name is Ben (a.k.a Black Hammer), a lot of Kevin’s mannerism is evoked in his character – as he is trying to win over his future brother-in-law’s respect and attention. Ice Cube’s character also plays his normal role, hardcore super stern demeanor in which he probably didn’t even crack a smile once. Ice Cube is heavily annoyed by Hart’s character the majority of the film in a Big Cop verse Little Cop type of scenario. There also was a LOT of emphasis on Ben’s height – that was the butt of the joke the entire movie. Oh and Ben’s is a super video game junkie that vicariously lives his real life like it’s a Call of Duty game (that may or may not save his life in the film). The film was shot in downtown Atlanta (where I live – yay!) so it was cool to see them journey their rides throughout the popular city.
This movie is an interesting duo collaboration between straight laced guy and horizontally challenged funny man. Just to be honest though, the love moments in the movie is very short and in between – but hey you always have to throw a little love in action/comedy flicks to break it up a bit. These two men usual sell well in the comedy department so go see the film to get a great laughs and a great Ride Along at the movies. Oh yeah John Leguizamo is in this film as well – haven’t seen him do a movie outside of animated (Ice Age series) since The Pest. Laugh out loud.
Movie in theaters everywhere January 17th.
