QUEEN AND SLIM MOVIE | ATLANTA SCREENING AND PERFORMANCE BY LAURYN HILL Wednesday 27 November, 2019
I was invited to a private screening, Q&A and after party for a much anticipated movie of this year, Queen and Slim. It is the modern day Bonnie & Clyde mixed with Romeo and Juliet vibe with a mix of melanin. Speaking of melanin its lots of it in this film! It is so beautiful! Check out the movie synopsis and trailer to learn more about this modern thriller love story.
Slim and Queen’s first date takes an unexpected turn when a policeman pulls them over for a minor traffic violation. When the situation escalates, Slim takes the officer’s gun and shoots him in self-defence. Now labelled cop killers in the media, Slim and Queen feel that they have no choice but to go on the run and evade the law. When a video of the incident goes viral, the unwitting outlaws soon become a symbol of trauma, terror, grief and pain for people all across the country. The film stars Daniel Kaluuya, Jodie Turner-Smith, Chloë Sevigny, Flea, Bokeem Woodbine, and Indya Moore.
TRAILER
The entire movie was so aesthetically please. Every shot looks like it could of been a part of a big editorial photo shoot. Very strategic as the director of the film, Melina Matsoukas, is a music director who has a perfect editorial eye for videos and now on the big screen. Melina directed some of your favorite music videos such as Beyonce’s “Formation”, countless videos for Rihanna, Ciara, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Snoop Dogg and more! She definitely has an eye for what is trendy and fun in any era so to translate in a movie she did it beautifully.
I loved it. I just love all of the asethetics. I will be honest I haven’t seen a movie so beautifully captured like this in a long time. The whole movie did look like one big music video. I love it was so much rich melanin, and that the main characters were two dark skinned beautiful couple. You really do not see that often on the big screen.
The film stars Daniel Kaluuya, which I feel its his redemption movie for his role in “Get Out”. If you seen Get Out you will know why I said that.
Jodie Turner-Smith, is an up and coming actress with this being her first big starring role did amazing. She looked like a model the entire film. I truly enjoyed just looking at her and going from very stoic in the beginning of the film to carefree! Sometimes it beautiful to see carefree black girl and some black boy joy!
This film has a message, and the ending has a thrilling surprise. The climate of the film at time can trigger parallels on what goes on in modern day with police brutality, public protest but overall it is still a love story.
During the Queen & Slim after movie reception, we were in for a huge surprise last night. Highlighting the role that music plays in the film (out Nov. 27), the screening, hosted by Spotify and Motown, featured live performances from artists featured on the soundtrack, including a 7-song set from Ms. Lauryn Hill.
Hill’s set included a performance of “Guarding the Gates” from the soundtrack. It’s her first original song she’s released since “Black Rage,” a song dedicated to protestors in Ferguson, in 2014.
I vibed so hard with Ms.Lauryn Hill, I manifested a selfie with her. I am so grateful. I have sincerely loved her since Sister Act 2. She is a kind spirit and by far, this is one of my highlights of the year. She is someone I have always wanted to meet and so happy I got a chance to see her perform for the second time. The first time was during One Music Fest in 2015.
Queen and Slim is in theater on Nov. 27th #QueenandSlim
Now that’s what we call a power packed performance.
Thanks for the wonderful share.
