Stay at Home and Stream: Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker (NETFLIX) Friday 20 March, 2020

Are you still wondering what to watch while you stay at home? Please Stay at Home and Stream with me Netflix’s Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker. Madam C.J. Walker was an African-American activist, entrepreneur, and philanthropist who became one of the first African-American women to become a millionaire.

Academy Award® winner Octavia Spencer stars as Madam C.J. Walker, the trailblazing African American haircare entrepreneur who was America’s first female self-made millionaire. Inspired by the book, On Her Own Ground written by Walker’s great-great-granddaughter A’Lelia Bundles, the Netflix original series, SELF MADE: INSPIRED BY THE LIFE OF MADAM C.J. WALKER  brings the uplifting story of this cultural icon to the screen for the first time. Against all odds, Walker overcame post-slavery racial and gender biases, personal betrayals, and business rivalries to build a ground-breaking brand that revolutionized black haircare, as she simultaneously fought for social change.

MADAM C.J. WALKER QUICK FACTS

Sarah Breedlove became Sarah Walker when she married her third husband. She took the name Madam because it was common for women in the French beauty industry to use the name.

Part of the inspiration for developing hair care products came from developing a scalp condition that caused hair loss.

Madam C.J. Walker established the headquarters for her company in 1910. Her company was named the Madam C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company.

In the years between 1911 and 1919 Madam C.J. Walker employed thousands of women in her business. By 1917 she had trained almost 20,000 women.

Madam C.J. Walker focused on training her employees in more than just selling her products. She also taught them how to budget and grow their own businesses to become independent.

By the 1920s Madam C.J. Walker’s products were well-known throughout Costa Rica, Panama, Haiti, Jamaica, and Cuba.

By the time Madam C.J. Walker died in 1919, she had become the wealthiest African-American self-made woman in the United States. She was estimated to have a net worth of the equivalent of $8 million by today’s dollars.

TRAILER

Now I am going to be watching and binging this series for the first time with everyone when it streams on March 20, 2020 on Netflix. Now I did have an opportunity to stream the first episode of the series a week ago, but unfortunately due to the COVID-19 pandemic the event was cancelled. It was going to be an epic brunch event hosted by Beyonce’s mother, Tina Knowles. Tina Knowles was going to sit with us and chat with us about the film and her own “self-made” journey, as she got her own beauty start as a very successful hairdresser in the 80s and 90s before Destiny’s Child kicked off. I was really bummed the event was cancelled, but thats ok! I still honor Tina Knowles and recognize her journey was blessed and the way was paved by the iconic Madam CJ Walker! I am still excited to stay at home and stream the show!

Please stay at home and be safe out there!

The four-part limited series also stars Blair Underwood as her husband C.J. Walker, Tiffany Haddish as her daughter Leila, Carmen Ejogo as Walker’s business rival Addie Monroe, Garrett Morris as Walker’s father-in-law, Kevin Carroll as her longtime lawyer Ransom and Bill Bellamy as Ransom’s cousin Sweetness.

SELF MADE: INSPIRED BY THE LIFE OF MADAM C.J. WALKER was created by Nicole Jefferson Asher with co-showrunners Elle Johnson & Janine Sherman Barrois, directed by Kasi Lemmons and DeMane Davis, and executive produced by Barrois, Johnson, Maverick Carter, Jamal Henderson, Eric Oberland, Christine Holder, Mark Holder, Kasi Lemmons, LeBron James and Octavia Spencer.
