Transformers: One – The First All-Transformers Animated Film That Redefines the Franchise Thursday 19 September, 2024
Transformers: One takes us back to the origins of the Transformers saga, long before the epic battles between Autobots and Decepticons. If you’ve ever marveled at the 1986 animated classic, this film aims to rekindle that nostalgia while diving deeper into the backstory of our favorite characters.
Directed by Josh Cooley, who brought us the heartwarming “Toy Story 4,” Transformers: One is animated with stunning 4K HD graphics that give it the look and feel of a modern video game. This is a big deal—it’s the first time we’ve seen the Transformers in theaters in animated form since that beloved ’86 film, and for the first time, there are no human characters at all, with the entire story set on Cybertron.
The film whisks us away to Iacon City, where miners Orion Pax (Chris Hemsworth) and D-16 (Brian Tyree Henry) are busy hauling Energon—the lifeblood of Cybertron—up from the depths. This is an origin story that focuses on the friendship between a young Optimus Prime and Megatron, before they became the iconic rivals we know today.
As the plot unfolds, Orion and D-16 team up with Elita-1 (Scarlett Johansson) and B-127 (Keegan-Michael Key) to follow a distress signal that could lead them to the missing Primes, the esteemed leaders of Cybertron. They hope to find a lost artifact that will save their society from impending doom.
Cooley has crafted a vibrant visual experience that captures a childlike wonder, making Transformers: One feel both fresh and familiar. While it has a kid-friendly vibe, die-hard Transformers fans will appreciate the deeper character development and the chance to explore the origins of figures they’ve loved for decades.
This film is truly transgenerational, appealing to both long-time fans and a new generation of viewers. With its engaging storyline and captivating visuals, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see more animated movies—or even a series—emerge from the “Transformers” universe in the future. Whether you’re a nostalgic fan or new to the franchise, Transformers: One is definitely worth a watch!
