Coming 2 America Sequel Arrives after Three Decades on Amazon Prime | March 5th #Coming2America Friday 05 March, 2021

I am really amazed as a three decade long sequel of Coming 2 America is finally here. An 80s cult classic has made its way into the 21st century and very much anticipated amongst several generations. When the original came out in the 80s, I was a child but it is definitely a classic for myself. I have seen the original Coming to America (1988) so many times I know the classic quotes like it just came out yesterday. I still break out and sing randomly on occasions still until this day “Just let your soulllll glooooo” and jheri curls have been long gone! Its time to see if the three decade wait was worth it and bring some new memorable and new laughs in this sequel.

This comedy sequel continuing the adventures of African prince Zakeem was set to be released in late summer 2020, but was then pushed back to 2021.I feel this was the type of film that the original touches so many backgrounds and cultures, it s a classic mostly everyone loved so you will want to see this sequel!

My Review:

I will first say I applaud this movie for featuring every alive character from the original Coming to America into the sequel. Impressive and very good for the nostalgia. Whats even better everyone looks amazing. Even James Earl Jones, who plays King Jaffe, at 90 years old still has the charm he did in the original. There were parts of the film that paid homage to with a nod to the first Coming to America and even brought some 80s surprises. I will say just stay tuned for the musical gust that make appearances, it just seems like everyone aged so well.

What I will say as well, I can see why Coming 2 America was made in 2019. It was coming off of the high acclaims of Black Panther, so it was only fitting to bring another African royalty film that merges the cultures of Africa and America together. I am sure if we weren’t in a pandemic, we would of all had similar energy going to the theaters in our African garb and attire to fit the royalty of the Zamunda family! I guess you will have to keep that same energy at home.

This is a no spoiler film, but I will say this strongly. I don’t think the original Coming to America can be topped. It was so groundbreaking, the music and even the comedic energy cannot be reproduced as it did in the 80s. I honestly believe they held back on many of the jokes, because they wanted this film to be multi-generational and as kid friendly as possibly making it rated PG13 and it shows. The Coming to America (1988) was rated R and was definitely meant for adults, so I am sure there will be a demographic disappointed in the sequel.

I will also say it was very nostalgic, but some ideologies were trying too hard to replicate the original or make it work when it shouldn’t of. As I stated previously, because it was so many quotes and memorable take-aways, the producers tried to recreate too many of those moments that shouldn’t of been touched. Certain things should just be left in the first film.

Eddie Murphy still did what he did best, he turned into multiple characters and even brought a new one! Speaking of new characters, Prince Akeem has a new family with children who play intricate parts of the film. There are also new characters and actors who made it into the film such as Leslie Jones, Tracey Morgan, Teyana Taylor and some new faces. My final remarks of this film will be definitely see it. It’s one of those films no matter what the critics say, you need to see it for yourself because of the anticipation. Each person who was a fan of Coming to America, you will be watching for the nostalgia and following the Zamunda family after all of these years. I want you to share with me your thoughts on Coming 2 America! Tell me your honest thoughts and how it contrast from 1988 to 2021!
