REVIEW

Prepare to be moved to the very depths of your soul by the profound message that resonates throughout The Color Purple. This film serves as a poignant reminder, a heartfelt plea, urging us all to embrace the transformative power of freedom in every corner of our lives.

Fantasia Barino’s portrayal of Celie in The Color Purple was absolutely breathtaking! She brought Celie to life in a way that felt like a spiritual reincarnation of the impact Whoopi Goldberg had in the original 1985 film. Fantasia possesses the voice, the soul, and the spirit of a woman who has endured oppression, yet refuses to be silenced. Her performance is filled with curiosity, hope, forgiveness, and patience. Even in this post-slavery era, The Color Purple serves as a powerful reminder of how oppression can shift from one form to another, from the chains of a slave master to the oppressive control of a “Mister.”

Celie’s yearning for her sister Nettie and her two children represents an unwavering hope that she will be reunited with them. The songs Fantasia belts out are nothing short of extraordinary, deserving of not just a nomination, but an Oscar win of her own.

Taraji P. Henson’s portrayal of Shug Avery is a passing of the baton, an incredible torch carried from Margret Avery. Taraji becomes Shug Avery as if she was destined for this role. She completely owns it, and no one in 2023 could have played it quite like her. Shug Avery shines as a star, brought to life by Taraji, even in the most oppressive era. During those times, for African Americans, the only way to achieve recognition and wealth was through singing, dancing, and entertaining. Despite all the fame and fortune, all Shug Avery yearned for was her father’s approval – a father who disapproved of her transition from gospel singing to secular music, all in pursuit of a better life for herself. Taraji brings out the full range of emotions, empathy, and soul that allow her to truly connect with Celie.

Danielle’s portrayal of Sophia is nothing short of powerful. Oprah’s original role as Sophia is passed down to Danielle Brooks, who takes it to new heights in this film. Sophia is a force to be reckoned with, unyielding and unbreakable until she is beaten down. In every aspect of her life, Sophia takes control, but unfortunately, she is born in an era where her strength goes unappreciated. Once again, oppression takes its toll, muting her power and silencing her soul, if only temporarily. The unwavering friendship between Celie and Sophia showcases the contrast between what freedom looks like for women and the harsh realities they face. While Celie is shackled in her marriage, Sophia is confined physically, but Celie finds her freedom in the real world, where Sophia was once free to speak her mind. In the end, their paths turn, and they all find their freedom.

Each woman in this film experiences liberation from something – freedom from domestic abuse, freedom from poverty, freedom from the confines of prison, freedom from being a caged bird unable to sing, freedom from dependence, and the freedom to break any generational curse meant to oppress them, even after their ancestors were freed from slavery!

The Color Purple is a timeless tale retold as a passionate reminder to embrace freedom in every aspect of our lives, lest we be controlled and cursed. It urges us to break the chains that bind us, to break free from the curse, and to create a new cycle of freedom.
