From Lab Coat to Apron: Brie Larson’s Empowering Role as a Chemist and Feminist in ‘Lessons in Chemistry’ in New Apple TV+ Series Friday 13 October, 2023

Atlanta had the opportunity to host a screening of the new Apple TV+ series ‘Lessons in Chemistry‘ at IPIC movies in Colony Square. The choice of IPIC as the venue was ideal since food plays a significant role in the show.

Attendees were able to enjoy a full entree while immersing themselves in the screening, perfectly complementing the show’s theme. The event was hosted by local blogger Emma Loggins from Fanbolt, who conducted a follow-up Q&A session with food consultant Courtney McBroom and producer Natalie Sandy.

TRAILER

Set in the early 1950s, “Lessons in Chemistry” follows Elizabeth Zott (played by Larson), whose dream of being a scientist is put on hold in a patriarchal society. When Elizabeth finds herself fired from her lab, she accepts a job as a host on a TV cooking show, and sets out to teach a nation of overlooked housewives — and the men who are suddenly listening — a lot more than recipes.

Brie Larson is known for her impactful roles in women empowerment and nostalgic projects. She will reprise her role as the superhero Captain Marvel in the upcoming Marvel Studios film “The Marvels,” set to debut in theaters on November 10.

In “Lessons in Chemistry,” set in the early 1950s, Larson plays Elizabeth, whose aspirations of becoming a scientist are hindered by sexism.

After being fired from her job as a chemistry lab tech, she takes on the role of hosting a TV cooking show called “Supper at Six.” However, for Elizabeth, cooking isn’t just about fun; it’s about applying scientific principles. Through her platform, she empowers dismissed housewives to think independently and pursue their dreams despite facing numerous barriers.

The series not only portrays barriers such as sexism, sexual assault, patriarchy, misogyny, and social justice but also weaves in elements of romance, science, and delicious meals. This show goes beyond the typical 1950s housewife cooking trope by emphasizing the scientific aspect and provides intriguing lessons along the way. It is a forward-thinking and feminist show for its timeline.

Starring alongside Larson are Lewis Pullman (“Top Gun: Maverick,” “Outer Range”), NAACP Image Award winner Aja Naomi King (“How to Get Away with Murder,” “The Birth of a Nation”), Stephanie Koenig (“The Flight Attendant,” “The Offer”), Kevin Sussman (The Big Bang Theory,” “The Dropout”), Patrick Walker (“Gaslit,” “The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey”) and Thomas Mann (“Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty,” “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl”).

“Lessons in Chemistry” premieres globally October 13 on Apple TV+
