THE BOOK OF CLARENCE
“The Book of Clarence,” the latest from “The Harder They Fall” director Jeymes Samuel, offers a fresh and audacious perspective on faith and morality. In this imaginative film, Samuel explores the journey of a self-declared new Messiah in the year 33 A.D., weaving a narrative that’s part comedy, part romance, and wholly introspective while deeply spiritual.
It’s a film that engages with Christian narratives within a historical frame, yet it’s unmistakably clear in its stance on faith. It nods to the grand Biblical tales of cinema’s past while charting a new, transformative course. Featuring a predominantly Black cast, the movie challenges the traditional depictions of Biblical characters and expands into a broader commentary on contemporary Black experience, societal pressures, and the complex tapestry of faith, all the while maintaining a perfect harmony of sharp visual humor and poignant depth.
The cast of “The Book of Clarence” stars LaKeith Stanfield as Clarence and Thomas, RJ Cyler as Elijah, Caleb McLaughlin as Zeke, Anna Diop as Varinia, Omar Sy as Barabbas, Nicholas Pinnock as Jesus Christ, James McAvoy as Pontius Pilate, Alfre Woodard as Mother Mary, Teyana Taylor as Mary Magdalene, David Oyelowo as John the Baptist and Benedict Cumberbatch as Benjamin.
