The 2024 Pan African Film & Arts Festival (PAFF) joyously wrapped up its much-awaited exploration of African and diaspora cinema and arts with a packed awards brunch, shining a light on the extraordinary filmmakers who enthralled audiences this year with their imaginative narratives and masterful storytelling.
Taking place at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza, the awards celebration was a vibrant testament to diversity, talent, and cultural wealth, embodying the festival’s aim to elevate African heritage and stories to the global forefront.
“We Grown Now,” featuring a stellar cast including Jurnee Smollett, S. Epatha Merkerson, Blake Cameron James, Gian Ramirez, and Lil Rel Howery, and directed by Minhal Baig, was honored with the festival jury’s Best Feature Narrative award.

Set in the landscape of 1992 Chicago, “We Grown Now” weaves the compelling tale of Malik and Eric, two young prodigies and best friends navigating through the challenges of school life and the adversities of growing up in public housing. As they are on the brink of discovering their potential, a tragedy tests the strength of their friendship. The film features outstanding performances by Jurnee Smollett, S. Epatha Merkerson, Blake Cameron James, Gian Ramirez, and Lil Rel Howery.
WE GROWN NOW is set for release on April 19th in NY and LA, with a broader release scheduled for May 10th.
