Movie Review: Disney’s Nutcracker and The Four Realms (Spoiler-Free) Friday 02 November, 2018

The red carpet was so pretty and if you haven’t had a chance to read the blog post, click here for the whimsical red carpet and world premiere experience I had. Along with the carpet, I was one of the first people in the world to screen Disney’s Nutcracker and The Four Realms. Read the synopsis and I will share a few of my thoughts (no spoilers) of this magical Disney holiday film.

Mackenzie Foy is Clara, Keira Knightley is Sugar Plum Fairy, Jaden Fowara-Knight is Phillip, Eugenio Derbez is Hawthorne and Richard E. Grant is Shiver in Disney’s THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS.

About the Movie

All Clara (Mackenzie Foy) wants is a key – a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a box that holds a priceless gift. A golden thread, presented to her at godfather Drosselmeyer’s (Morgan Freeman) annual holiday party, leads her to the coveted key—which promptly disappears into a strange and mysterious parallel world. It’s there that Clara encounters a soldier named Phillip (Jayden Fowora-Knight), a gang of mice and the regents who preside over three Realms: Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers and Land of Sweets. Clara and Phillip must brave the ominous Fourth Realm, home to the tyrant Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren), to retrieve Clara’s key and hopefully return harmony to the unstable world. Starring Keira Knightley as the Sugar Plum Fairy, Disney’s new holiday feature film “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” is directed by Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston, and inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann’s classic tale.

Mackenzie Foy is Clara in Disney’s THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS

So I will start with Clara, who is the main character who is on a journey to find this gift her mother has given her but it is a quest into another world. This is where she is presented with The Four Realms and meeting the characters who run each realm and learning of their issues and shortcomings. In this world, because of the legacy of her mother she realizes she is more important than she knew and she gets help in finding her true strength and power, but of course not without going through some obstacles first.

Jaden Fowara-Knight is Phillip in Disney’s THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS.

Here is the Nutcracker! The Nutcracker, who also goes by Captian as well as his actual name “Phillip”. Who knew the Nutcracker has a name. Just like in the tales you knew of him before, he is a brave solider ready for anything to protect and to conquer evil forces. When he meets Clara, he begins to guard and protect her as she continues the journey into the Realms of this world. The Nutcracker, played by Jayden Fowara-Knight, did amazing as this is his first movie role!

Morgan Freeman is Drosselmeyer in Disney’s THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS.

Morgan Freeman plays Clara’s GodDaddy in this film. Who else knows how to play such a powerful guardian role none other than Mr.Freeman. He is a man of wisdom and love in which he plays an intricate part in how Clara makes her way into the Four Realms.

Keira Knightley is Sugar Plum in Disney’s THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS.

The Sugar Plum Fairy hands down has the best costume in this movie. I was excited to see this film just to see Keira Knigtley bring the sugar plum to life and she did it excellently. She is beautiful, full of grace and child-like innocence. She takes an immediate interest to Clara as she realize she is the next heir to her mother’s legacy. The Sugar Plum also warns Clara of one of the Realms that is full of danger, in which later on she will meet with a not so “sweet” surprise and turn of events.

Misty Copeland is the Ballerina Princess in Disney’s THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS.

One of my absolutely favorite parts of this movie is with Misty Copeland who plays the Ballerina Princess. We all know The Nutcracker legacy is based off the holiday ballet rendition of this story, so she brought this energy to the big screen. She also was called to be the official choreographer and director of the ballet dance sequences throughout this movie. The ending dance sequences were phenomenal she did an amazing job! The ballet essence of the film lives and its all thanks to Misty for bringing it to life!

Mackenzie Foy is Clara and Jayden Fowara Knight is Phillip in Disney’s THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS.

Keira Knightley is the Sugar Plum Fairy and Mackenzie Foy is Clara in Disney’s THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS.

The movie overall was a story of journey and self-discovery. It’s a whimsical fairytale brought to life and the holidays are present with this film as an early gift of the season. With all of the beauty that comes with this film, you will definitely feel the holiday energy. All of the costumes were absolutely stunning and high couture. The fashion alone was just amazing, watch out for Clara outfit when she gets into Solider-Mode! Slay! The film is a different take on the traditional Nutcracker story, but that is the fun of Disney. They know how to remake a classic and give it a modern and beautiful spin with a message. Get into the holiday spirit and go see a timeless classic and introduction into The Four Realms.
