Its exciting to get random packages in the mail and I literally was not expecting this special box from Netflix. I was gifted this bright box and it was for their movie, Project Power. I didnt see any trailers or promo for the film when I received it as I got it 2 days before the movie debuted on the streaming service. Usually I would go to a movie screening prior to share with you all the movie and my thoughts, but this is the first time in months I didnt get a chance to do so. This pandemic has put my movie screenings on hold for a second, but I am excited to get press packages to share with you all to get hyped about new movies just like everyone else right now who movie theater is in the comfort of their homes now.

I got this bright yellow box full of fun goodies all New Orleans themed. This lets me know immediately this movie is based in NOLA and that has me excited! Do you all know NOLA is one of my favorite places to travel? I was supposed to go on a press trip prior to the pandemic so receiving this box really warmed my heart and makes me miss this fun city!

So many great things in this box! The cyclinder that was in the box unraveled was unique artwork by a NOLA artist who drew a depiction of Jamie Foxx in the film. He is the star of the film and I am curious about what his power may be in the film. Again upon receiving the box I had no clue what it may or may not be but great way to get me intrigued with the art!

What would you risk for five minutes of pure power? On the streets of New Orleans, word begins to spread about a mysterious new pill that unlocks superpowers unique to each user. The catch: You don’t know what will happen until you take it. While some develop bulletproof skin, invisibility, and super strength, others exhibit a deadlier reaction. But when the pill escalates crime within the city to dangerous levels, a local cop (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) teams with a teenage dealer (Dominique Fishback) and a former soldier fueled by a secret vendetta (Jamie Foxx) to fight power with power and risk taking the pill in order to track down and stop the group responsible for creating it. 

I did get to watch the film and I love it so much! It’s not your typical “superpower” movie. Its a mix of coming of age, a sprinkle of hip-hop and a lot of New Orleans vibes we don’t get to see as often. I have been to NOLA a few times so I can always figure out major landmarks and locations, but I think this movie does a great job giving you a different feel of the city than your typical Creole southern vibe.

Its modern, its fresh and this movie is full of energy. Young and mature would enjoy this film! I love both Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt and I had no idea they would make such a great co-starring combo! Dominque Fishback is an obvious breakout star of this film, although sandwiched between these two actor vets, she stands out pretty strongly and holds her own as a newbie and young woman.

Its not your typical action film too. Not too over to the top, not too violent, not too explicit and not to dramatic with the “powers”. Its a good mix of everything and make it feel more realistic. Even though people in this film get “powers” like some new X-Men, the energy of this movie isnt trying to replicate anything from the DC Universe.  I highly recommend this stream, storyline and cinematography is great and as I stated in my byline, this film is an easy pill to swallow!

I want to give a little appreciation to Dominique Fishback. She is an up and coming actress who played a 16 year old girl in the film, but 29 in real life. You know what they say black don’t crack…but is black vampire? Sheesh girl twenty-nine where? She is the supporting lead in this film but might as well have been her movie. She is a powerhouse and definitely more in store for her in the future!
