REVIEW
The Super Mario Bros. Movie was yet another movie that’s taps into the nostalgic heart and brought it to life. I’m telling you movie money makers realize going back into 90s or beyond nostalgia is a big cash cow. Well they got me.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a very vibrant film that takes the story back to the beginning. The story of the start of the “The Super Mario Bros.” How Mario and Luigi were struggling plumbers in Brooklyn, New York and was just try to jumpstart their careers and instead jumpstart into another dimension.
I’ve always said the mushrooms that are a big focal point of the original The Super Mario Bros. game, it’s an inquiry on if the creators took the psychedelic kind and came out with one of the most iconic video games on the planet? For me the answer has to be yes! This entire movie was like a colorful psychedelic dream for children. The film took many samples from different Super Mario Bros.games franchises such as Super Mario World, Super Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart, Luigi’s Mansion and Donkey Kong Country.
My personal favorite reference to the video game franchise was Rainbow Row from Mario Kart. It was one of the most vibrant things I have ever seen in a film. It was beautiful to watch, and it instant brought me back to when I first played Mario Kart as a kid and the nostalgia feels kick in. If you or your kids never played the film, they will see in the scene alone why this game was so iconic. It will make the new generation become big fans of the Mario franchise and the scene on Rainbow Road truly is the epitome of live-action bringing the game onto the screen.
There are so many characters that we all know and love that stars in the film such as Mario (Chris Pratt), Luigi (Charlie Day), Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), Bowser (Jack Black), Toad (Keegan-Michael Key), Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen) and more!
The Princess role actually surprised me the most! We all grew up with Princess Peach as the damsel in distress for most of the gaming franchise. In this film, she is actually very much the leader of the Mushroom Kingdom, smart, saavy and knows how to play this game way better than Mario. She actually doesn’t need “saving” she is just trying to protect her kingdom. The way the portrayed Princess Peach with how she knows how the maneuver in “the game” will make you want to request to Nintendo’s headquarters on having a Princess Peach solo game!
With all of these amazing character mentioned, I know hardcore Super Mario Bros. fan will ask…where the heck is Yoshi?!? Yoshi doesn’t make an appearance in the film, well…no spoilers but kinda. Yoshi is visibly missing throughout the entire film and it’s frustrating, but it could mean this movie is only the beginning. There definitely has to be a sequel and maybe even a Super Mario Bros. Marvel-style multiverse that can keep all of this going. Will Yoshi been in the sequel? Will Yoshi have his own movie? Will other characters have their own movies and spin-offs? There are so many possibilities, but definitely I think Yoshi will be apart of the franchise soon, just not this film.
End Credit Count:
Thanks to Marvel movies, you can rarely go to most films without feeling like there are end credits. Oh there are definitely end credits in The Super Mario Bros., so please don’t rush yourself or your children to get up when you believe the movie is finished. There are TWO (2) end credits – mid-credits and the final credit scene.
I will not ruin what any of the credits are, but let’s just say the final credit scene will definitely spark and answer the question of a SEQUEL!
