REVIEW
Growing up did you play the traditional role-playing board game Dungeons and Dragons? It’s either a hardcore yes or a hardcore no, as the tabletop fantasy game seems to be a target for “nerds” and people who didn’t want that label.
Because of the D&D stigma, I think the movie will give fresh perspective of the brand in a new way. It doesn’t go the Jumanji route and have the viewers step into gameland, you are just watching the film from the perspective that the D&D world is the standard universe. It doesn’t even imply it is a game. I thought that perspective was good because myself and I am sure countless others never played the game, so you don’t get lost in translation watching the movie.
“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” did what it was supposed to do in modern times – tap into our nostalgia! Did you know this game is 49 years old? So most thing nostalgia has made it from the 20th century into the 21st century and has gotten a film or tv show adaptation.
I personally thought the movie was going to be corny and predictable, but it was actually a fun ride. I thought it was going to give me Marvel theatrics (which at times it did), but it also did it own thing. It created its own narrative and had its own special effects. The film is based on a role-playing fantasy, but I think it’s the fantasy of the storyline that made it all come to life. Life is the game, and DND came to life in the film. I’m excited for future sequels!
The ensemble cast includes Michelle Rodriquez, Regé-Jean Page, Hugh Grant, Justice Jesse Smith, Sophia Lillis and Chloe Coleman.
