[CELEB SPOTLIGHT] INTERVIEW WITH KARAN KENDRICK FOR JUST MERCY FILM Friday 10 January, 2020

It is about time we tell true America stories of wrongful imprisonment and death penalties. I got a chance to watch the film “Just Mercy”,  which tells the true story of Walter McMillian, who with the help of young defense attorney Bryan Stevenson appeals his murder conviction.

This film is based on the book by Bryan Stevenson, who is played by Michael B. Jordan in the movie as the young defense attorney and his special case adapted for Just Mercy.

According to a study in 1985, a majority of Americans say life without parole is a better punishment for murder than the death penalty. So not only does the film depict a young lawyer defending an innocent man on death row, but it even poses the thought of should criminals get the death penalty? Its a very emotional film, and it might make you see and humanize with some of the characters in the film about the life of a death row inmate. It’s not too many movies who explore that side of the prison system.

TRAILER

SYNPOSIS

A powerful and thought-provoking true-story, “Just Mercy” follows young lawyer Bryan Stevenson (Jordan) and his history-making battle for justice. After graduating from Harvard, Bryan might have had his pick of lucrative jobs. Instead, he heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned, with the support of local advocate Eva Ansley (Larson.) One of his first, and most incendiary, cases is that of Walter McMillian (Foxx,) who, in 1987, was sentenced to die for the notorious murder of an 18-year-old girl, despite a preponderance of evidence proving his innocence and the fact that the only testimony against him came from a criminal with a motive to lie. In the years that follow, Bryan becomes embroiled in a labyrinth of legal and political maneuverings and overt and unabashed racism as he fights for Walter, and others like him, with the odds-and the system-stacked against them.

Karan Kendrick stars in Just Mercy film

During the Atlanta screening for Just Mercy, I met Ashten Goldstein the producer of the film and also Karan Kendrick who stars in the film. The next day I got an exclusive opportunity to interveiw Karen Kendricks to learn more about her role in Just Mercy.

INTERVIEW WITH KARAN KENDRICK

It was a joy to interview Karan Kendrick. She plays Minnie McMillian, who plays Jamie Foxx’s character (Walter McMillian) wife. Her role in the film was very powerful and important for telling this story. If you knew your husband was going to be on trial for the death penalty, how would you react? This is the tale of a wife and mother in the late 80s and 90s who is terrified but determined to get justice for her innocent husband to spare his life and reunite the family. Check out my one-on-one interview with Karan Kendrick to get her perspective of her role and feelings on this film.

Karan Kendrick as Minnie McMillian in Just Mercy (2020)

Karan Kendrick did an amazing job depicting the energy of Minnie McMillian. Telling the tale of Walter McMillians story from the late 80s and early 90s reminds us that the justice system still has a long way to go, even today. This movie is telling an American story of legal fighting to save someone’s life to fight against the dealth penalty. The good news is, the federal government hasn’t executed a death row inmate since 2003.

Michael B. Jordan alongside the real Bryan Stevenson in whom he portrays in Just Mercy

Please go see this exhilarating film full of emotion and triumphs. Please support Karan Kendricks as well as she brings Minnie McMillians character to life on the big screen to make an impact!
