Exclusive Interview with the Voices of Disney/Pixar Incredibles 2: Violet Parr (Sarah Vowell) & Dash Parr (Huck Milner) #Incredibles2Event Wednesday 20 June, 2018

I was hosted and sponsored with an all-expense paid trip to Los Angeles to cover #Incredibles2Event #PixarFest #BigCityGreensEvent. Thank you Disney for the opportunity!

I hope you got a chance to see the Incredibles 2 movie by now as I got a wonderful opportunity to interview the voices of the superkids, Violet and Dash Parr. Violet Parr is voiced by Sarah Vowell who was the original voice from The Incredibles (2004) and Huck Milner is the new voice of Dash. Huck is only 10 years old, so he wasn’t even born when the original movie was around. It was great to get their perspective of how they both voice the roles of the Incredibles kids as siblings as you can see there is a 30 year age gap between them. Check out the interview below and see how incredible these on-screen siblings collaborated together for the first time.

How did they both get their start in the industry?

Huck: I was 4 when my sisters were in plays. And they introduced me to plays. When I got into plays, I just really loved them. So, I just loved the theater and then I got into an agent. I got to auditions and I just really lucked out.

Sarah: It was because they were casting or thinking about casting the first film, and I think Brad was in his car listening to the radio and heard one of my public radio documentaries and was so taken with the gravitas and maturity of my voice. He heard a junior high school student who becomes a superhero in that. People who are actors are like “How do I become a voice actor?” Go into journalism.

An incredible way Huck got into becoming Dash better while on set.

Huck: Well, Brad didn’t tell me to do this. I actually one time put on the Incredibles suit and ran around the entire Pixar Studios. I’ll just run around the booth. Sometimes you would wanna do that. And I couldn’t laugh. So, I had to have someone tickle me.

How Sarah felt getting back into character and the changes over the last 14 years?

Sarah: “I mean she and I sound a lot alike, so there’s that. And, you know, Brad and I became friends in the first film. Some of the other people who work behind the scenes, I have kept in touch with everybody. I would just go there just to have lunch with them sometimes. So, I was perfectly happy to just, you know, move into another room and get paid to be there. It has been a while since the first film, but like when you become one of these characters. You (referring to Huck) will learn this, Huck — you are Dash until you die.

Like that lady who was Snow White got old, and she was always Snow White. And so over the years, not a week goes by I haven’t talked to someone who wants to talk about how much they love the film or what Violet means to them. You know they always stay alive.

When I was a kid, there weren’t even VHS tapes yet and you saw a movie and it was gone. But I think since then because of VHS and then DVDs and now streaming, children watch these films over and over again and I’m sure, as you know, so do their parents. And so, at any given day someone is watching that movie. Violet stays alive just because of other peoples’ fandom.”

What were their personal favorite scene or most proud moment of their character?

Sarah:  Oh. In the first movie. There was that moment in the cave on the island when they (Elastigirl, Violet, and Dash) need to go save Bob? And Violet is like I don’t know if I can do this, and her mother says you’ve gotta step up. And she decides, okay, I’m gonna try. And she goes out of the cave, and she stands up and almost does the superhero pose and puts her mask on. It’s like, yeah.

Huck: My favorite part of my character in the new movie when…well it wasn’t really a superhero part. I just liked it when he was pressing buttons. Crushing a couch inside of a water feature.

How do they feel about their own merchandise for their characters? Sarah set the question up for him since this was his first time having Dash products in his likeness.

Huck: I —

Sarah: Wait. Did you own any Dash stuff –

Huck: I actually –

Sarah: …before you became Dash?

Huck: No, I didn’t. I owned the movie. But right now I own this doll that has my voice coming out of it, which is pretty funny. And I think it is really cool how I can just press the button and then –

Sarah: How many times have you done that?

Huck: I thought they were supposed to ask the questions.

::we laughed at this pretty hard::

Huck: Maybe 100 or more. I don’t know.

We had to ask them what superpower do they both wish they had in real life?

Huck:  Mine would be super speed like Dash, probably because I’m really slow in real life. I cannot beat my cousins or my sisters at any game involving running. So, I wanna be able to go somewhere and then just come back and be like I was here the whole time. Yeah, so I would just love to have Dash’s power.”

Sarah:  As a middle-aged lady, I would love super strength, because I don’t know if any of you have like those rubber jar opener things. Wouldn’t it be great to just open a jar of jam with your own strength? Or like have you tried the trick where you boil water in the tea kettle, pour that over the jar and then use the rubber jar opener to get it open. That’s the stage I’m at now. If I could open a jam jar or like move a car with my hands, either of those two things, I would love.

This was a fun interview. Despite the actual age differences, it looks like Sarah and Huck developed a fun sibling-like relationship while recording for Incredibles 2. I am sure Huck had a ball playing Dash and this being his first animated voice role. It’s great to know the voice of Violet was the same and Sarah came back like she never left from 14 years ago. Dash and Violet have super roles in the Incredibles 2, kids turned heros…superheros! OMG, there is so much interesting info here, but the one thing I took away more than anything else was this:

  • I love that the entertainment news television shows today were all talking about the mom’s curves. I honestly didn’t notice a difference and had the shows not mentioned this over and over I wouldn’t have noticed at all! I’m just here for Jack! Jack! anyway! 🙂

  • Heather says:

We saw Incredibles 2 over the weekend and seriously loved it! The whole cast of characters was impressive, but I have to say that Jack-Jack was my favorite.

  • Annemarie LeBlanc says:

My daughter has seen it and she said the title is totally appropriate – Incredible! I asked her never to spoil my excitement. I am going to watch it this weekend.

  • I’m surprised by the fact that Violet’s real person is not a teen like in the movie, but it’s cool that she was able to comeback and reprise her role as Violet. I think it would have been weird if they had different voices.

  • Dogvills says:

It always interests me to know more about the people behind the voices. It must be a tough job but to see the final outcome must be fulfilling. Thanks for sharing the interview. I had fun reading through it.

I can’t even remember the year it was shown. Well, I got old and had a family of my own. It’s just fun to see that they made a sequel that my child gets to see what I was watching when I was a kid. And that it connects me to them.
